Grand Bassin is a must-see in Mauritius.

Considered by Mauritians to be the most sacred place on the island, Grand Bassin, also known as the Ganga Talao, is a lake approximately 18 metres deep. It represents the famous Indian Ganges River, and is located in the heart of the mountains of the southwestern part of the island. It is surrounded by statues of Hindu gods and many colourful temples. Many visitors are attracted by this site. They come to relax, pray, meditate or simply walk and admire the splendid view of the sacred lake.

The Ganga Talao, nestled in the crater of an ancient volcano, was discovered in 1897 by a Hindu priest who had seen the sacred Indian lake, the Gange, flowing into the Grand Bassin. Today, it is one of the most important Hindu places of pilgrimage in Mauritius. The lake is also part of a Hindu festival on the island, one of the most important, Maha Shivaratri. Every year thousands of pilgrims travel to celebrate the god Shiva, one of the three main gods of Hinduism. On site, in traditional dress, they attend their prayer and offering ceremonies and meditate.
